About Berber
Berber studied at the Utrecht school of the Arts and graduated in drawing at the teachers department in 2000. She graduated with high distinction and was nominated for two prestigious art prices. She continued her study by studying at the Photography department in Utrecht, from which she graduated with honors in 2003. She had already started her profession as an artist, continuing painting and teaching at an art center.
Berber has a great passion for kimono. The Japanese kimono/textiles and the Japanese traditional culture are a huge inspiration for Berber. While the old days of Japan help her visualize her own dreams, the modern view of Japan, the fun fashion and crazy films, help her try and put the dreams into the "modern" world.
Berber specialized herself in making dreams visual. Experiencing the world around her as quite harsh and challenging, she finds great comfort in the arts, both in her own work as in all kinds of art disciplines around her.
Her works show dreams materialized in a very clean way, inspired by the simple lines of sumi-e and clear prints of ukiyou-e from Japan. Making sweet pictures, like the series "Snoepjes" (Candy) A series of photographs mounted and laminated on thick wood; maybe so sweet it makes your teeth hurt, but that is the point.
Besides working in a Japanese shop and creating her works Berber collects kimono and has a great collection which include beautiful antique kimono as well as modern ones.
She is especially interested in the authentic and original way of wearing kimono and she collects not only the kimono but also all the accessories so she can dress herself or somebody else in the original and authentic manner. Always wanting to learn more and become better, she keeps practicing her "kitsuke" the art of dressing (in kimono). Berber is also a moderator on a forum about Japanese Culture and she organizes demonstrations about kimono in the Netherlands.
